Random Acts of Kindness 101 – with thanks to Nick Heap

Random Acts of Kindness 101 - with thanks to Nick Heap

I wrote a blog some weeks ago that asked the question Where are you most connected? in which I pointed out that I seem to be doing most of my random connections on Facebook these days purely and simply because of it's brevity and randomness.

This afternoon whilst answering messages and housekeeping my Facebook account I was struck by this posting from Nick Heap

I have a particular affinity with Random Acts of Kindness as anyone who "suffered" my 100 blogs last year on the subject can tell you, so you can imagine that the title of the post caught my eye and pretty much leapt off the FB page.

Where are you most connected?

It's my birthday today and at the time of writing I have had 127 people wish me Happy Birthday via Facebook.

Despite being ranked 170 in the UK and 298 in the world and an Ecademy score that keeps me almost permanently in the top 30 I have had precisely 0 birthday wishes via Ecademy. I have however had a number of Ecademists wish me Happy Birthday via Facebook and a couple on Twitter and Google+.

Now don't think for one minute that I'm complaining at not getting birthday wishes. The overwhelming amount of messages from Facebook have in fact kept me busy all day saying thank you. The point of writing is merely to ask the question posed in the title.

Technology Will Kill

Thomas Power wrote a great blog last week called "the problem with technology". Thomas's video made for interesting and provocative viewing.

I've just started reading another digital leader's book called, rather appropriately, "Digital Leader" by Erik Qualman.

Where should 8 x 18 year old girls go mad this summer?

My middle daughter has her mates round for a planning session to organise next summer's holiday.

Its the first time that most of them will have been away on holiday completely independent of parents or "organisers" of one kind or another. Eight 18 year old girls looking for the "holiday of a lifetime"

Bearing in mind that one of them is my daughter what suggestions do you have for them to take a week (or two) holiday in late August early September.

Their only requirements (so they tell me) are a beach, pool and watersports. They are all pretty active, sporty kids. I suspect they might also be interested in bars and boys but I'm sure they'll find them (or be found by them) wherever they go.

All suggestions carefully considered smile

Thank you

What did Santa bring you this year?

So the presents have all been opened, turkey eaten, games played, mince pies munched and Christmas movies watched and now I'm back on Ecademy where my question for you all is...

What did Santa bring you this year?

Santa brought me Steve Jobs biography, a large Maglite torch, a Top Gear calendar and a hamper full of Cornish food and drink so I'm a very happy bunny today.

How about you? Did you get everything you desired? Were there any great (or little) surprises?

Why not change your 50 words this Christmas?

Last year I posted a viral Christmas video from these guys. This year they've made a new one.

Christmas in 50 words

The poem is by Dana Livesay. The musical track "Solace" created by Brian Wurzell and TJ Hill. Thanks to Igniter Media

Merry Christmas Everyone

Do you Tergiversate?

According to the Huffington Post a panel of editors, lexicographers and others at Dictionary.com have chosen the Word of the Year for 2011 and the word they have chosen is "Tergiversate" which means "to change repeatedly one's attitude or opinions with respect to a cause, subject, etc.; equivocate."

The Huffington Post gives as examples "in 2011, the stock market tergiversated; or that the public tergiversated about Occupy Wall Street." but I'm keen to hear what your views are.

Banned from sending email!!!

According to today's Daily Telegraph staff at French IT services company ATOS are to be banned from sending each other emails because they "waste time and are outdated". Instead they will be encouraged to use a chat-type collaborative service inspired by Facebook and Twitter.

"Thierry Breton, the CEO of Atos and a former French finance minister, wants a "zero email" policy to be in place within as early as 18 months, arguing that only 10 per cent of the 200 electronic messages his employees receive per day on average turn out to be useful."
